You love the wear and shine of gel polish, but not the lamp, the curing time or the removal with acetone? The good news: there is now a real alternative to gel polish without a lamp. Here's what really works, and what doesn't.
Can you do real gel polish without a lamp?
Not strictly speaking. Gel polish is a liquid gel that only hardens under a UV or LED lamp: without one, it stays sticky and never dries. Bottles sold as "gel polish without a lamp" are actually enriched regular polishes that air-dry: tougher than ordinary polish, but far from the wear of gel.
To get a real gel finish without a lamp, you need a product whose gel is already cured before application: that's the principle of no-UV gel nail wraps.
No-UV gel nail wraps, the alternative that works
A no-UV gel nail wrap is a thin strip of real gel, cured in the workshop then cut to the shape of the nail. You stick it on, file off the excess, and you're done. You get:
- the thickness and shine of gel, with no successive coats;
- no drying time: your hands are free immediately;
- wear of up to 14 days, depending on your routine;
- gentle removal, with no buffing and no acetone soak.
Gel polish, regular polish or gel nail wraps: the comparison
| Gel polish | Regular polish | No-UV gel nail wraps | |
|---|---|---|---|
| UV/LED lamp | Required | No | No |
| Drying | Under the lamp, coat by coat | Long, risk of smudges | None |
| Application time | 30 to 45 min | 20 to 30 min, plus drying | About thirty minutes the first time, then around ten |
| Wear | 2 to 3 weeks | A few days | Up to 14 days |
| Removal | Acetone or buffing | Remover | Peels off gently |
Who is it ideal for?
No-UV gel nail wraps are particularly suited to you if you want a polished manicure without booking an appointment, if you don't want to invest in a lamp and bottles, if you change colour often, or if your nails need a break after repeated salon sets.
How to get a perfect application
- Degrease the nail with the wipe provided: this is the step that makes it last.
- Choose the closest width for each nail from the 22 strips.
- Place it a millimetre from the cuticle and press from the centre outwards.
- File the excess downwards.
Every step is illustrated in our application guide, and the complete guide to no-UV gel nail wraps answers your other questions.
